Simple...we introduce ourselves? It's true, whenever you meet somebody new the very first thing you do is exchange names with the other person. This name becomes the identity to which you will formulate your opinion on, and creates a connection between you and the other person that can be identified to that specific person. It is essentially the foundation upon which you will possibly build a relationship with the person you just met.
God also has a name, and the first thing you should do if you want to build a relationship with him is use his name. It makes sense that you would use his name does it not? Considering the fact that there are over 1,000,000 gods to choose from, each with their own name, how else would we identify the one true God from the scriptures from all the other gods.
“For even though there are those who are called “gods,” whether in heaven or on earth, just as there are many “gods” and many “lords,”” - 1 Cor 8:5
So if you were Greek long ago, you may have worshipped Zeus, or Apollo, or Venus. Or if you were an Egyptian, perhaps you worshipped Ra, or Isis, or Horus. There are many, many gods that mankind had worshipped through the ages, yet there can really only be one true God. Considering that all the gods mankind has worshipped throughout time have names, wouldn't if be fair that the one true God also has a name. The one who actually gives life to his creation, who is the source of all creation in heaven and on earth. If you believe in what the scriptures teach then you may already know that the scriptures teach us that Gods name in English is Jehovah, our Father.
“. . .That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth.”-Ps 83:18(KJV,ASV)
When Jesus was addressing the people and explaining to them how they should pray, he gave us what many people know as the Lords prayer, or the model prayer. The very first part of the prayer shows the importance of knowing Gods name. As the only perfect human Jesus set the example for us to follow in his footsteps(1 Pe 2:21). He said:
"...Our Father, who art in heaven, holy is your name..."- Mt 6:9
In fact, throughout the scriptures we are told of Gods name and how important it is. It was so important that God issued the third command that they should "not use God's name in vain"(or contempt).
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.” - Deut 5:11
Obviously God wanted the Israelites to use his name. The commandment didn't say not to use Gods name, but to rather use his name with respect. God wants all his followers to call on his name, and to build a personal relationship with him, and what his name stands for.
After all, everything that we know about somebody falls on the name we know them by. Consider the devil is also a god(2 Cor 4:3-4). His name represents all that is evil. When you hear the name Satan, what do you associate that name with? Most people would associate that name with evil, wickedness, hate, Gods enemy etc. However, some people worship Satan as their God, so by using Gods personal name, you can identify to which God you are worshipping. Ps 83:18, Isa 12:2, Isa 26:4, Isa 42:8
“Those knowing your name will trust in you, for you will certainly not leave those looking for you, O Jehovah.”—Psalm 9:10.
Compared to the majority of people who simply use titles such as "Lord" or "God" to identify with the most high, it is so much more personal when we use God's personal name given to us from the scriptures. For how can you truly appreciate the qualities of an individual when you don't first recognize the name on which those qualities stand? Of course just knowing a name doesn't mean much until you get to know the person, and what that name represents.
God's name, Jehovah, means "he causes to become". He is the true purposer of all that exists. He is the source. All that he purposes will be accomplished, and all his promises fulfilled (Isa 55:11). Only the true God can rightfully bear that name, and will not give that honor of causing all things to become to anybody else. Why should he, HE IS GOD!!!
"I am Jehovah. That is my name; and to no one else shall I give my own glory, neither my praise to graven images." - Isaiah 42:8(ASV,YLT)
The answer is because most bibles have taken his name out, and replaced it with GOD or LORD. Yet, Gods name is the most used name in the scriptures over all other names. Nearly 7000 scriptures contain his name in the original manuscripts, yet you wouldn't know this because it has been replaced with the title of "LORD" or "GOD".
Is it not a little peculiar that of all the names in the bible, the only name that has been removed is Gods personal name? Let that sink in for a moment. The only name that has been removed from most bibles is Gods. Every other name in the scriptures has been allowed to remain where the original manuscripts used them, except for Gods. Who, or why, would want to do this? Obviously, Satan would hate for you to have a personal relationship with your creator, so what better way to avoid it than for you to not know his name. For how can you truly worship a God that you don't personally know? He becomes an impersonal force instead of an intimate friend.
Have you ever heard the saying "you don't know, what you don't know"? If you are using a bible that has taken the name of God out, well then of course you wouldn't think it was that important, because your bible doesn't use his name. How can you know the value of something if you don't know it exists? How would you feel if your bible also took out the name of Gods son, Jesus Christ? Do you think Jesus' name is important? Of course you do, because it is there in the scriptures just as it was originally meant to be. Yet Jesus taught us that his fathers name was holy and made it known to his followers. (Mt 6:9)
“. . .Righteous Father, the world has, indeed, not come to know you; but I have come to know you, and these have come to know that you sent me forth. 26 And I have made your name known to them and will make it known, in order that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in union with them.”” - Joh 17:25-26
If your bible has taken out the very name of our Righteous Father, which Jesus made known, shouldn't you ask yourself...why? If you don't think it really matters look at verse 26 above, and see why Jesus made his fathers name known. It tells us so that Gods love for Jesus would also be in his followers, and that they would be in union with each other. If Jesus thinks this is important, shouldn't you also?
“My sheep listen to my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” Joh 10:27
“In fact, to this YOU were called, because even Christ suffered for YOU, leaving YOU a model for YOU to follow his steps closely.” 1Pe 2:21
Jesus set the perfect example for true Christians to follow, this cannot be argued. If you are a Christian then use the name that God has given to us(2 Tim 3:16) in the bible, Jehovah. Your life truly does depend on it.
A week prior to Jesus death, as he was talking to his disciples, a large crowd formed around him, and he again mentioned how important his fathers name was to him, he said:
“. . .Father, save me out of this hour. Nevertheless, this is why I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name.” Therefore a voice came out of heaven: “I both glorified [it] and will glorify [it] again.”. . .” - Joh 12:27-28
It should be quite clear to anybody studying the bible how truly important Gods name was to our King Jesus Christ. Remember that Gods name was the most used name in the original texts penned so long ago. It's apparent from what we have discussed that God not only wanted his followers to know his personal name, but also to use it in their daily lives, and to let it stand and represent the source of all things that exist. How else can you truly identify the one and only true God?
If you have never used his name before, the name truly represents what your relationship with God will stand on. He will become to you a rock to stand on, a guide to instruct you, a secure place of refuge(Pro 18:10), a deliverer, and a person to confide in, and so much more. In fact, soon the end times will be here, and having a close relationship with our creator and his son will be the most important thing that you can have. The prophet Joel gives us sound advice on what we should do.
“And it must occur that everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will get away safe; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will prove to be the escaped ones, just as Jehovah has said, and in among the survivors, whom Jehovah is calling.”” - Joe 2:32
Jehovah is calling each and every one of us to call on his name. It is up to us to listen and heed this warning. Through his son Jesus Christ, pray to the Father, and ask him for clarity, for discernment, for an open heart to help you put his righteous standards on(Eph 4:24), and live by each and every day. Put faith in the sacrifice that Jesus Christ gave, and give yourself the best opportunity to live forever in Gods righteous kingdom. In Jesus own words...
“. . .Nevertheless, the hour is coming, and it is now, when the true worshipers will worship the Father with spirit and truth, for, indeed, the Father is looking for suchlike ones to worship him. 24 God is a Spirit, and those worshiping him must worship with spirit and truth.”. . .” - Joh 4:23-24
As a true Christian you made a promise to God when you were baptized, that you would put faith in him through his son, and our King, Jesus Christ, to uphold and stand for truth from the scriptures. It is our responsibility as Christians to use Gods name in a holy way, to treat it with respect, and to draw close to him in worship. Our Father, Jehovah, is looking for such like ones to worship him. The apostle James says this:
“Draw close to God, and he will draw close to you.”— James 4:8
Can you think of any way to draw closer to God than to begin by using his personal name? He is our source of life, of love, of happiness, and through his son Jesus, gives us hope of everlasting life in a world free of wickedness and death. Pray to him, ask him to open your heart and mind to get to know him better, to become more Christ like in your efforts of becoming a stronger Christian soldier. Raise you head up and call on your God through his son Jesus Christ.
Who is this God?
